“Pilly”

I remember when I was younger my mother had this little thing, it looked like a handheld fan, that she would run across her sweaters to get the “pills” off of them.  “You don’t want your sweaters to look pilly,” she would say.

There are words that stick with you.  “Pilly” is one of mine.  I never liked the sound of it and while I couldn’t have cared less when I was younger, I grew up knowing I never wanted to have pilly sweaters. It seemed like such an awful fate.

Pills, in case you don’t know, are the little balls that collect on your sweaters and make them look less than new.  They hide in heavy rub areas, which sounds naughty, but it’s not.  Pills need to be removed, I’ve known it my whole life.  They are like dog hair or lint from a white napkin.  If you walk around with them on your sweater, it looks yucky or dirty or cheap and not as cozy, warm or fluffy.  Hey, don’t blame me, I don’t make these rules.

So, every fall I do the “pill check”.  I pull my sweaters out of their cubbies and I give them a little microderm abrasion.  I don’t use the fancy motorized thingie my mom had.  I have a little comb that I think has razor blades on it and that works most of the time.  Pills are a pain, but their removal is a sign Fall is here.

I love cold weather.  Living in Arizona I probably appreciate it more than the average person with actual seasons.  October has been a tough month.  It will get a touch worse before it gets better, but as of last night my sweaters are pill free and happy.  It’s the strangest thing, but that’s enough for now.

My thoughts from the laundry room.  Pill-ows Please! (See what I did there?)
