Marriage is a tough business.  Anyone that says it’s not, that it’s easy, is either lying to you or to themselves.

Two people, different interests, different families, backgrounds, hopes, ambitions that make it through the ridiculousness of dating to a proposal.  A deal, they make a deal, to love only one person, think of that person.  In the deal there’s business about mutual expectations and finding the things in common.

Once the deal is done, life kicks in and there are bills and jobs, some people have health issues and children. The odds are just insane.

Anything can happen really, at any point one of you can change your mind or your life or fall for someone else that you think has more in common or will work out better.

The cards are stacked against any couple from the very beginning and yet we still marry.

People that are not married, are not invested in a deal yet, some of them long for that connection and union.

Why?  All logic says it makes no sense and we should be running from each other, from the deal.

We went to Yosemite about a month ago.  The amazing granite cliffs, rock structures and water falls at one point were over 15 miles under the surface.

It’s hard to wrap my head around that, 15 miles.

Over time the earth above was worn away, plates shifted and Yosemite emerged.  It is a wonder, absolutely breath taking.

Millions of people from all over the world visit Yosemite every year.  Our hiking guide shared with us that only 1% of visitors actually hike up any of the trails.

Most stay at the base, some even in their cars, and they take pictures.  He said that the hikes can be strenuous and many people don’t participate.

We hiked up to Yosemite Falls, I guess that makes us the one percent.  It took all day, eight hours and my legs were sore.

The falls were overwhelming up close and while we had lunch I could feel the mist on my face.

The hike coming down was pretty tough because of the snow, the whole thing for that matter was a strain.

On the way down I fell, I always fall, and there were several times my feet were not happy with me.

After our day we were all exhausted and after dinner we turned in early.  I put my sore body to bed and curled up next to Michael, as I always do.

He wrapped his arm around me, as he always does.

We’d been through a lot and we fell asleep in each others arms.  I was comforted and warm and…loved.

That must be why people do it.

Despite the trials, the pain and the effort marriage takes.  In spite of the differences there is one person that gets you, loves you and holds you when things have been hard.

We are willing to deal with the craziness, take the chance, even fall down, because we know there are moments and a safe place to rest.

My thoughts from the laundry room.  Feather Bed.
